  •  Horace Walpole invented the Gothic Novel with his novel Castle of Otranto in 1765 and it was in England. .

Dracula: vampires, perversity and Victorian anxieties

  • The vampires are a contradictory figure because they represent a terrorrific character and they represent the nocturnal glamour too. 
  • In the book: Dracula, there are contrasts and clashes between old traditions and new ideas (old Europe and modern London).
  • Bram Stoker includes new ideas and inventions in his modern novel of Dracula like photography and technology.
  • The form of the modern novel is like as if it were letters, diaries and newspapers cuttings. 
  • Some critics said that Stoker uses the character of Lucy to attack the concept of the New Woman to describe women who were taking advantage of newly available educational and employment opportunities to break free from the intellectual and social restraints imposed upon them by a male.
